Albert Terrell: Four Counties, Five Enslavers, and 21 Children
I’m a descendant of a man named Albert Terrell. I have found proof that he was enslaved by several men in four different counties in Georgia. He had at least 21 children, and therefore he is the ancestor of thousands of people living today all across the world. Albert lived in Early County, Georgia, and his descendants spread to the adjacent counties of Clay and Randolph during Reconstruction.
Albert was born about 1815 in Greene County, Georgia. He was enslaved by a lawyer named Thomas Terrell. Thomas died in 1822, and his oldest son, a judge named David Shelton Terrell, sold over 40 enslaved people at the courthouse in Greensboro, Georgia to pay off his father’s debts. I believe Albert was purchased by Dr. William Terrell, a United States Congressman and physician who owned many forced labor camps across the South.
Eventually, Albert was brought 211 miles southwest to Early County, where he started a family with his wife, Harriet. She was most likely bought by Captain Joseph Grimsley, a veteran of the Indian-American Wars, around 1839 from James Glenn, who bought the neighboring plantation. Joseph also purchased Albert at some point after 1840 and enslaved him until his death in 1860. He bequeathed Albert to his son Richard Grimsley in Clay County, Georgia, and Harriet died shortly after that. After emancipation, Albert returned to Early County, where he married his second wife, Amy. He remained in Early County until he died in 1878.
